Juan D’Arienzo: The King of the Beat
In 1937 Juan D’Arienzo literally propelled an entire city to its feet with his irresistible beat, setting in motion tango’s dance revolution. The public loved it but the intelligentsia were scandalised, condemning his music as a return to the past and writing D’Arienzo out of tango history. Dancers know better, but just why do we like it so much? Listen closely, and this music is not as simple as it sounds.
